Winter trees

I have found this group of trees not far from home, which have interesting shapes, particularly the middle one. I intend to follow them during the year and see how they look in different seasons.

Clivia miniata

Clivia miniata comes from South Africa. It grows in sub-tropical savanna. The common name is the Bush Lilly which I assume does not describe the plant's morphology but rather its habitat, as savanna is referred to as 'the bush' in South Africa. Clivia are members of the Amaryllidaceae.

The specimen in the photo is grown as a house plant. It is several years old but does not flower regularly.

David Hockney RA - A Bigger Picture

I have recently visited the David Hockney Exhibition (A Bigger Picture) at the Royal Academy in London. A wonderful display of paintings of the Yorkshire landscape through the seasons. And for the photographer, there was the bank of 18 wide screen monitors showing HD moving images taken using a bank of 9 cameras mounted on a frame in front of a slowly moving vehicle. Both innovative and inspiring.

In this image I like the idea that Sir Joshua Reynolds, co-founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts, is standing in front of his canvas, brushes poised while he is taking a quick look over his shoulder to see what David is up to!

Winter arrives in Berkshire. Winter has been a very mild affair so far but on Saturday morning the temperature was down to -3.5ºC. I went out early to capture some images along the Kennet & Avon Canal. I was not alone, a solitary jogger was also enjoying the crisp fresh morning air.

This image shows the strategic position of Corfe Castle in the line of the Purbeck Hills, Dorset. It also shows the rather unpromising weather during our visit last November.

Corfe Castle occupies a good defensive position controlling a gap in the ridge of the Purbeck Hills. The castle was captured during the English Civil War (1642-51). It was under siege for sometime before the attackers gained entry disguised as Royalist reinforcements arriving to support the garrison. The castle was destroyed by the Parliamentarians following the siege in 1645 to prevent any future return of Royalist forces.

This Sussex beech wood was still not showing any sign of autumn colour when I visited a week ago.
I have attempted to capture the life cycle of the tree. In the foreground is a mature beech, to the right is a young sapling and behind is a dead tree sprouting bracket fungi.

Another flower in my garden taking advantage of the warm autumn weather. The flowers are a little smaller than the first flush of summer, but still beautiful.
